“Tokyo Review 004”The first railway station in Japan: Shimbashi (Shiodome)

Tokyo Review 004”

In this review, I would like to focus around the railway stations.

It was the year 1872 when the first train in Japan, of course the first in Tokyo, started operation from Shimbashi to Yokohama. At that time, “Shimbashi” station was located at the place now known as “Shiodome”. The Shiodome area originally was a reclaimed land created in the Edo Era and was occupied by Samurai such as Matsudaira-Higonokami of Aizu-prefecture. The government needed large sites to build the railroad stations, thus obtained these lands.

The starting point of the Tokaido line had changed from the Shimbashi station to the Tokyo Station after its completion. The Karasumori station was renamed to be the Shimbashi station, which is where the station is today. At Shiodome, a huge freight train station had been established and supported logistics of Japan from the postwar reconstruction period to the high economic growth period. After, this significant role, the area had been reborn to become the “Shiodome Sio-site”.

The convenience of the railway network around Tokyo had improved stably since the launching in 1872. I would like to cover these topics in the future.
