Tokyo Skytree, whose 634m height is after “Mu-sa-shi”

As you may happen to come to wonder when you see an ordinary structure in your usual day, “When was this built?” I’d like to cure this wondering by writing about “The Memorial Day of a building completion ” in the middle of other topics.

The first topic is about the Tokyo Skytree. It was opened to the public on March 22th 6 years ago(2012). Its height, 634m was decided after “Mu-sa-shi” (In Japanese, the figure 634 can be read Musashi). Musashi is the old name of the area it Is standing. It is also known as being listed in the Guinness World Records for the tallest free-standing broadcasting tower in the world.

It is well known that the increase in number of skyscraper in Tokyo has caused interference to the radio waves from the Tokyo Tower. Therefore the construction of a new broadcasting tower was planned, in the area which was part of “Musashi”: a name of province in old time included Tokyo metropolis, Saitama prefecture and a part of Kanagawa prefecture.

Not only for its functional demand, but also as a new symbol of Tokyo, its design was planned to show the traditional figure of Japan, and it has become much more “ordinary” in existence for people’s recognition now.

The lighted-up image of Tokyo Skytree, together with Sumida river and Kiyosu bridge is splendid, emotional and pleasant.

In addition, the Tokyo Tower opened on December 23th, 1958, and its unspeakable charm will be introduced in another post on “The Memorial Day of a building completion”.
