In the Tokyo area, 22 areas are designated as the National Strategic Special Zones, and 6 more areas are aiming for certification by the fiscal year 2018.
Among these, the Tokyo Central and Coastal areas, the Shinjuku station area, the Shibuya station area, the Shinagawa-Tamachi station area, Haneda airport’s former site, and the Ikebukuro station area are designated as the “Asia Headquarter Special Zone” in 2011. The aim is to attract foreign companies and to accumulate bases for business, research and development in the Asian region.
The “Toranomon-Azabudai area development” (maximum height 330 m) is expected to be completed in 2022 and the “Tokiwabashi area development” (maximum height 390 m) is expected to be completed in 2027. These are projects to materialize this initiative.
Various regulatory reform menus (regional plan) had been proposed by the regional plan committee, not limited to urban development. As of June 2017, 80 projects in the Tokyo area, and 242 projects nationwide had been certified by the Prime Minister, after going through the advisory council.
