Urban development of Hanoi, slowly but steadily

The old city area of Hanoi is maintaining its historical atmosphere keeping some taste from the Chinese’ regime and the French colonial period. New urban development including tall buildings are gradually proceeding mainly on the west side of the city,. Such developments are the Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower (72-storey), and the Lotte Center (65-storey). Those areas correspond to the suburban areas of Tokyo such as the area along loop road No.7 or No.8.

Also, a new urban area is being created on the east side and the north side of the Hong River (Red River). Construction of the subway lines 1 and 2 are also proceeding, however it seems that they are not in a rush when compared to the construction in China.

In 2015, an AEON Mall was created on the east side of the Hong River. I wonder if we can say that it is a Japanese style mall, but there are Japanese restaurants, safe foods, and Japanese products such as rice cookers which are getting popular. It seems to be off to a good start from the opening.

Due to the fact that the speed of importing shops and young people ‘s new lifestyle from overseas is faster than the speed of urban renewal such as redevelopment, I feel some kind of a gap between the features of the streets and the people’s lives there.

In recent years, they have set up special zones in Vietnam, and are planning to approve Casinos in those areas. The resort development along the coast is rapidly proceeding. On the world heritage site, Ha Long Bay, a major real estate development company Sun Group is pursuing huge development targeting Chinese tourists.
